Tantalum: material & procurement overview

Tantalum is a dense refractory metal known for a protective oxide and corrosion resistance in many environments. That makes the actual process medium central to material selection. Our materials show tantalum pieces, flat forms and machined parts; the enquiry can cover material for further fabrication or a defined finished component.

Corrosion-focused selection

Specify the exact chemical medium, concentration, temperature and contaminants rather than relying on a general corrosion-resistance description.

High melting point

Thermal use requires an atmosphere and process-contact review. The melting-point reference does not define a safe operating limit.

Thin and formed geometries

Foil, sheet, tubes and shaped parts require surface, bend, wall and joining requirements that match the component design.

Material properties & grade reference

Property / specificationReference or selectionProcurement meaning
Material identityTantalum (Ta)Element reference; identify the industrial grade separately
Atomic number73Element identity
Density at room temperature16.4 g/cm³Reference for the element; delivered material depends on grade and condition
Melting point3017 °CElement phase-change reference, not a continuous service-temperature rating

Reference basis: Royal Society of Chemistry element reference. These values or composition examples describe the material family. They are not guaranteed values for every delivered grade or finished component.

Tantalum is not resistant to every chemical environment. Fluoride-containing media and hot alkalis need specific compatibility review. Tantalum-tungsten alloys are separately specified materials, not another name for pure tantalum.

Applications & design inputs

Connect the material choice to the finished component: identify the process, contact surfaces, operating conditions and critical assembly interfaces.

Use the examples below to prepare a drawing-based enquiry. Final material suitability and achievable geometry are reviewed for your project.

Chemical process parts

Describe contact chemistry, cleaning, pressure and temperature for a liner, tube or fitted component.

Vacuum & coating equipment

Supply the geometry, contamination limits and assembly details for a thermal or deposition-related part.

Custom fastening & fabrication

Identify threads, mating surfaces, joints and the intended material grade on the drawing.

Tell us which surfaces contact the process, which dimensions control fit, and what documentation the project requires. An application example is a starting point for a specification; final suitability is reviewed against your actual conditions.

From your drawing to an agreed manufacturing scope

01 · Define — Send the grade, drawing and function, with unknown details clearly marked.
02 · Review — Discuss geometry, processing, surface condition and critical inspection requirements.
03 · Agree — Confirm quotation scope, documentation, packaging and delivery requirements before production.
Our material range and manufacturing photographs support drawing-based project enquiries. Achievable dimensions, material properties and inspection scope are reviewed for the actual grade and part; the photographs do not define a fixed stock item.

Tantalum procurement questions

Can tantalum be selected from the acid name alone?

Provide concentration, temperature, impurities and cleaning conditions as well. Those details determine the compatibility assessment and the exact material specification.

Can you quote non-standard forms and dimensions?

Send your drawing or initial dimensions, material grade, quantity and component function. We review the required geometry and finishing together. State whether you need a material blank or a finished component.

Do the reference values define the delivered specification?

No. Use the exact grade and agreed order requirements. Tell us which material tests and inspection records you need so their scope and acceptance criteria can be included in the quotation.

Request a quote for tantalum products

Send your grade, drawing, dimensions, quantity and operating conditions to sales@bomometals.com. Include the delivery country, requested schedule and required inspection documents.
A sketch or description can start the discussion. The finished specification, manufacturing route and quotation terms are agreed for your project.
